So you might have read an article about it or see it on tv or social media but you might be asking yourself what is pickleball. We have written this article to answer this question and hopefully it will entice you into start playing!
So what is pickleball?
Pickleball is a racket sport which is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong and padel. It’s played on a court which is the same size as a doubles badminton court. You can play either singles or doubles like tennis and each player has a paddle (which is the name for the racket in pickleball).
There is a net which is 36 inches high and players play with a special perforated ball. Like tennis the aim of the game is to win points by either hitting a winning shot or when your opponent makes a fault such as hitting the ball in the net or letting the ball bounce more than once.
Like badminton you serve underarm but unlike badminton the server must allow the return to bounce before continuing with the rally.
There is also the non-volley area (which has the nickname ‘the kitchen’) which is unique to pickleball. A player is not allowed to volley if they are stood in this area.
